Product Description
Stainless Steel Passivation System
Stainless Steel is naturally corrosion resistant, but we've all seen stainless parts rust at some point. Passivating stainless parts is a way to increase the rust resistance of a part by removing iron from the surface of the metal.
Passivating is easy, requiring no power or other complex procedures. Simply clean the parts and immerse in the passivating solution for 30 mins. The passivating solution and degreaser are heated on a hot plate.
The Passivating Solution is an environmetally friendly citric acid based product. No disposal problems, fumes or dangerous chemical reactions, like in nitric acid systems.
The 1 Gallon Caswell Stainless Passivating Kit contains:
- 2 x 2 Gallon Metal Tanks (for degreasing and passivating) and 1 x 2 Gallon Plastic Tank (for rinsing)
- SP Degreaser (2lbs - Makes 4 Gallons)
- Citric Acid Based Passivating Crystals (Makes 1 Gallon)
- Thermometer
- Gloves
- Instructions
- Copper Sulfate Test System (to test for successful passivation)
Passivating Steps are:
- Heat the Degreaser to 200 def F on a hotplate
- Immerse parts in degreaser. Scrub if necessary. Thouroughly clean the parts. Any dirt or oils will prevent passivation in those spots.
- Rinse in rinse tank
- Heat Passivating Solution to 150 deg F on hotplate
- Immerse in Passivating Solution for 30 mins
- Rinse In Rinse Tank
- You may check for a successfully passivated part by swabbing with the copper test solution. If copper is deposited on the part, it has not been successfully passivated in that area.
Recommended Skill Level
Beginner level products can and should be used by anybody, including those who consider themselves not crafty, handy or hands on. Most beginner level products can be used out of the box and can expect results within minutes. It is always important to read the product instructions and description on the web site before use, for example, nearly all of our plating kits require a polished and clean surface before plating.
