Product Description
Easily spot blacken steel (not stainless) or iron. Simply apply the black oxide gel where you want the blackening to occur. The gel keeps the blackener in place. Leave it on the part for 1-3 minutes and rinse off. Seal with Caswell Sealer for a dry finish.

Works good to blue steel parts
I've used other competing cold blues and this works very nicely. Any gel oxidation applied the right way can get you nice streak-free color. Rub the color in smooth and apply with spots of torch heat.

Works OK until it dries out and turns solid
When I first purchased the gel it worked as advertised but I use it in small quantities to just blacken small parts by using a Q-tip dipped into the bottle and then capping it. After a half dozen uses and consuming about maybe 15% of the gel content in the bottle, it's dried to the point where it's almost like hard wax and unusable as the active ingredient apparently evaporates quickly when you open the bottle. I can see a squeeze container like a tube working better for the gel than the small bottle which allows the volatile solution to quickly evaporate. The only way I see being able to use the full gel contents is if it's consumed in a couple uses, not for small quantity use multiple times.

Worked well
This worked very well - but - was not the right product for what I was trying to do. Wound up having the rods powder coated. I have used it on several other small projects and it was fine. I will reorder.

Easy to use and smooth finish.
Application was a breeze. The sealer leaves a satin finish that is durable and easy to clean.

Works fine on carbon steel.
I tried this product on an Ed Brown Stainless Steel Ambidextrous thumb safety and it would not work at all. I also tried it on a Kimber Eclipse Stainless Steel and it also would not work. However, when I applied it to several Smith and Alexander magwells, that are carbon or blue steel parts, it worked fine. I also tried it on Kimber MIM parts, which are plastic metal injection molded, it would not work on these either. But, I was very pleased with the outcome on the carbon or blue steel parts. It seems to stay far better than cold blueing.

Used product to blacken armour
took 2 coats to fully blacken large surface, metal may not have been quite clean enough. Would work great for small pieces or touch ups.
-
Works well enough
I used this on two knives I made by hand and to finish an axe head I reground. Finish was inconsistent and blotchy on one of the knives but worked well the other two times. Perhaps the knife wasn't clean enough?

Black Oxide gel
I am happy with the oxide kit and it works fast and makes a black or greyish black finish on steel. If there is a weak spot ,it is easy to touch up to get a consistent color.Once the piece is sealed,it looks even blacker. It is also ideal for making antiqued look if desired.
-
Works exactly as advertised
Clean the part with dish soap and water, coat it with the blackener, rinse it off and coat it with the sealer. It worked great for the small part that I used it on, looks like a commercial product, a nice flat black finish.
