Product Description
A Complete Kit For Stripping Chrome, Nickel and Copper From Steel, Aluminum and Plastics
Triple Chrome plated parts have a layer of chrome, nickel and copper plates over the base metal. To remove all the plating from these parts usually involves buffing or sand blasting, which can be time consuming, costly and could damage fragile parts.
With the Caswell Metal Stripping Kit, sandblasting or buffing chrome, nickel and copper plating from metals becomes a thing of the past. The kit contains Caswell Chrome Stripper, MetalX Nickel and Copper Strippers, and all the required tanks, agitation and cathodes. A DC power source is required for the chrome and copper removal. We recommend a 25 Amp unit, which would easily handle a maximum of 1 square foot of metal.
The Chrome Stripper in this kit can also strip anodize from aluminum (no power required)
How to Use:
- Check the part for cleanliness and for base metal. Pot metal (zinc die cast) parts should be checked very carefully for pits through the plating to the base metal. The chrome stripping step will attack these pits and possibly dissolve the part. The copper stripper does not work on pot metal, but you can easily repair the existing copper plate with a layer of Flash Copper plating.
- Hang the part from titanium or copper wire (copper wire not supplied) into the chrome stripping bath. Connect the part to the positive side of your power source. Connect the negative side to the GP Plates. Apply 12V to the part for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The chrome is a very thin layer and should come off very quickly. The nickel plate that is under it looks very similar to the chrome. A common mistake is to believe the chrome is not coming off in this step, when in fact you are looking at the nickel plate.
- Rinse the part in the distilled water chrome rinse tank.
- Heat the nickel stripper to 120F. Begin agitation. Hang part into the nickel stripper. No power is required. A normal thickness of nickel plate (1/1000") should be removed in 30 minutes. This should reveal a copper plate, assuming the part was in fact Triple Chrome Plated. Some platers use a simple nickel/chrome plate over steel.
- Rinse the part in the dedicated distilled water nickel rinse and proceed to the copper stripping tank.
- Hang the part from titanium wire into the copper stripper. Connect the part to the positive side of your power source. Connect the stainless cathodes to the negative side. Apply 3-6V (0.13 amps per square inch of part surface area). Stripping rate depends on the amount of amperage used. Parts can be visually checked for copper.
- Rinse the part in the dedicated distilled water copper stripping rinse tank.
- Parts can immediately proceed to re-plating if desired.
Other Nickel Strippers are available that strip nickel directly from aluminum and steel.
