Great cutting compound
The black compound is excellent for cutting through abrasions. I was polishing some aluminum wheels. The faces required sanding the machine marks down after stripping the powder coat off. I thought I had sanded far enough, but small areas were revealed again when I finally started compounding. The black cut through everything I needed it too with ease, and I was only using 4" sisal wheels & spiral sewn wheels on a die grinder! I can't imagine it's versatility on an 8" wheel. Always start out with black compound before a polishing job, and save yourself hours of unnecessary work. As far as cutting, I think the black would probably be 5x more coarse than the brown tripoli, I burned through half a bar of black compound over the course of a valve cover, timing chain cover, and 4 wheels - and a couple miscellaneous parts. So if you're working on a lot of never-before-polished parts, grab some black emery compound and work it with a sisal wheel. in fact, grab an extra if you're doing a lot of prep work on large jobs. A trick I learned is use Sisal + Black, Spiral Sewn + Black, and then spiral sewn + Brown. Going with a sisal does a lot of fast cutting, but I found that moving directly from a sisal to a spiral sewn with brown, had poor results - so I smoothed things out with a spiral wheel and the black before moving to brown. Prep work prep work prep work!

awesome!
there is no other better method for polishing aluminum than starting with black bar and a vented wheel. it ripped thru ALL the oxidation on a very tarnished vintage Airstream
